With seven games left in the regular season, Chapel Hill’s girls basketball team looks like a solid No. 4 seed out of Region 4-AAAAA.
However, there is plenty of season left for the 11-4 Lady Panthers to chew on.
“We have [seven] games to go,” head coach Sherri Hintz said. “We hit a little down spell, we lost a couple of games we shouldn’t have lost. I think we are rebounding from that now, and I hope they are headed on the right track.”
Chapel Hill is 6-3 in region play, good enough for No. 4, but the area has been extremely competitive of late. Westlake leads the pack with an 11-1 region record, followed by Mundy’s Mill and Riverdale, who are 9-2 and 8-2 respectively. Chapel Hill needs to maintain its winning percentage to either move up or pace itself from an 8-8 Lovejoy team looking to make a move.
“We have stepped back and tried to go back to the basics this week and see if that doesn’t help,” Hintz said. “We are going to have to box out, we are going to have to execute with our passes and not try to force something that isn’t there. Just play smart basketball.”
Hintz said the triumvirate of Oneisha Smith, Jametria Fletcher and Kanesha Looper has helped power Chapel Hill’s success down the stretch.
“They have stepped up and take some more leadership and added some consistency to our game,” she said.
Despite losses to Riverdale and Mundy’s Mill this month, Chapel Hill has maintained success fairly well. Dropping only four games all season, the Lady Panthers will head into one of their most competitive stretches of the season.
Chapel Hill travels to East Coweta and Lithia Springs this weekend before tangling with Lovejoy, Riverdale and Langston Hughes next week. The Lady Panthers will close the regular season with home games against Morrow and Pebblebrook.
“We can’t have any breakdowns, and we can’t have any bad nights from here on out,” Hintz said.
